Writing Camps Home / Camp & After School / Specialty Camps / Writing Camps AM Sessions (9:00 am–12:00 pm): Phonics & Writing (JK–K Grade) Week 1 (June 15–18) Strengthen early literacy skills through fun-filled songs, movement, and hands-on learning! This engaging camp helps young learners build confidence in reading and writing through interactive phonics games, songs, and center-based activities. Students will practice vowel and consonant sounds, blends, and spelling patterns while creating their own sight word cards. They’ll also develop sentence-writing skills through fun and creative journal prompts; all while building a strong foundation for future reading success! Junior Journalist (2nd–3rd Grade) Week 5 (July 13-16) Mrs. Owens is thrilled to lead Junior Journalism, a camp designed to spark creativity, encourage self-expression, and refine communication skills. Through engaging and thought-provoking topics, students will discover new personal insights and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them; all while having fun putting their ideas on paper. Join us for an inspiring and enriching experience! Grammar Garden (JK-1st Grade) Week 8 (August 3-6) Watch your language skills grow! In this fun, hands-on camp, young learners will explore the building blocks of grammar through stories, songs, and interactive games. Campers will “plant” parts of speech, “grow” sentences, and nurture their reading and writing skills in a playful, garden-themed environment. With creativity and imagination blooming all week long, students will gain confidence in their early literacy skills while having tons of fun! Grammar Greatness (2nd–3rd Grade) Week 8 (August 3-6) Help your child improve their reading, writing and conversation by achieving the grammatical skills necessary for 2nd and 3rd grade! Join Mrs. Owens as she introduces the fundamentals of grammar including the basic parts of speech, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation. Fun activities will not only keep the students engaged but will also help them understand the function of concepts. By the end of this course, they’ll be bound for greatness! Scribble to Script (1st-3rd Grade) Week 8 (August 3-6) Join Mrs. Owens for a week of fun and focused handwriting practice! Whether your child is improving their printing or mastering cursive, this camp is perfect for building confidence and skills in penmanship. Mrs. Owens specializes in helping students excel in this area, making it an ideal choice for all students—especially those new to Heritage Oak. Let’s make handwriting a success! Picturesque Poetry (2nd–5th Grade) Week 9 (August 10-13) Explore the world of poetry with Mrs. Owens! Tap into your creativity and express your emotions through words. Students will dive into different types of poetry while crafting and illustrating their own unique pieces of art. Grammar Olympics (2nd–5th Grade) Week 9 (August 10-13) Get ready for the Grammar Olympics with Mrs. Bernard! This fun and interactive academic camp will have students competing in events like capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and word usage, all while aiming to Go for the Gold! Throughout the week, we’ll strengthen our memory muscles with rules, guidelines, and strategies, then put our skills to the test in games designed to beat previous scores in each event. Join Mrs. Bernard for a week of learning, laughing, and striving for Grammar Gold! PM Sessions (1:00 pm–4:00 pm): Build a Book (1st Grade) Week 6 (July 20-23) Become an author and illustrator for the week! In this fun and creative camp, first graders will plan, write, and design their very own storybooks. Campers will brainstorm characters, settings, and plots, then bring their stories to life with colorful illustrations and craft materials. By the end of the week, each student will proudly take home their completed book; an exciting keepsake that celebrates their imagination, creativity, and growing writing skills! Writing Studio (3rd–5th Grade) Week 9 (August 10-13) This class will focus on creative writing in fiction, poetry, drama, and personal narratives. Students will develop and reinforce descriptive writing, personal expressions, vocabulary, and word choice, how to write for pleasure, dramatic and poetic form, and journalistic writing. We’ll have performance, interactive group work, and writing games. A personal decorative writing journal will be created for students to use as a continued source to practice their writing skills throughout the summer. English proficiency required. Writer’s Workshop (1st–2nd Grade) Week 9 (August 10-13) Mrs. Owens is calling all writers! This writing class will not only strengthen campers’ skills, but it will also foster a love of writing in a fun, encouraging environment. Because this class will focus on writing using a voice, campers will draw inspiration from creative projects done inside the class such as painting and crafting. Each student will also keep a writing journal which will be used daily. Comparison writing activities from the start of camp until the end will allow parents to see the wonderful progress made by their campers. Kinders Write On (JK/K Grade) Week 9 (August 10-13) Get ready to write, draw, and create! In this fun and supportive camp, young writers will build early writing skills through hands-on activities, storytelling, and imaginative prompts. Campers will practice forming letters, writing simple words and sentences, and illustrating their ideas as they bring their stories to life. With songs, games, and plenty of creativity, this camp helps students gain confidence and excitement for writing as they prepare for the school year ahead!
