Reading Camps

English proficiency is required for all Reading Camps.

AM Sessions (9:00 am–12:00 pm):

Summer Spelling Bee (1st-2nd Grade)

Week 4 (July 6-9)

Buzz into spelling success! In this fun and supportive camp, 1st and 2nd graders will strengthen their spelling and phonics skills through engaging games, friendly competitions, and hands-on activities. Campers will practice word patterns, sounds, and sight words while building confidence as spellers. The week will wrap up with a mini spelling bee celebration where every student gets to shine! It’s the perfect mix of learning, laughter, and language fun!

Vocabulary Venture (2nd–3rd Grade)

Week 6 (July 20-23)

Embark on a word-filled adventure with Mrs. Owens! In this fun and interactive camp, 2nd–3rd graders will expand their vocabulary through exciting games, reading activities, and creative challenges. Campers will explore new words in context, learn their meanings and uses, and practice applying them in writing and conversation. From word scavenger hunts to vocabulary bingo, each day brings a new way to build confidence and language skills. By the end of the week, students will be true word wizards and ready to use their new vocabulary everywhere they go!

Reader’s Theater (1st Grade)

Week 6 (July 20-23)

Lights, scripts, action! In this lively and imaginative camp, 1st graders will bring stories to life through expressive reading, acting, and teamwork. Campers will practice fluency, pronunciation, and confidence as they read short scripts and perform mini plays based on favorite children’s stories. With simple props, costumes, and plenty of creativity, every child will shine on stage while building strong reading and speaking skills. It’s the perfect blend of literacy and fun!

Real World Readers (3rd-4th Grade)

Week 6 (July 20-23)

Boost your nonfiction reading skills in this engaging summer camp with Ms. Tafolla! Students will explore a variety of nonfiction texts, learning to understand their unique structures and styles. Through interactive activities and guided practice, campers will build confidence in navigating and comprehending nonfiction—a common challenge for many students. Join us for a week of discovery and growth in nonfiction literacy!

Readers Theater (1st–2nd Grade)

Week 9 (August 11–14)

Become a reader’s theater superstar! In this fun and exciting camp with Mrs. Owens, students will strengthen their reading fluency skills by practicing and performing a reader’s theater script. Students will get different roles and work together in groups to work on their expression, eye contact, and presentation skills. They will build their confidence and have fun creating props and backdrops to go with their stories. At the end of the week, their stories will be brought to life for their reader’s theater performance! English proficiency required.

Back to School Literacy Skills (JK-K Grade)

Week 10 (August 17-20)

Get ready for kindergarten success! This camp focuses on building early literacy skills through engaging, hands-on activities designed just for young learners. Students will strengthen letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and beginning reading skills while exploring stories, songs, and fun literacy games. In a supportive, classroom-like environment, campers will gain confidence and excitement for learning, ensuring a smooth and positive start to the new school year!

Back to School Reading Bootcamp (1st Grade, 2nd-3rd Grade, 4th-5th Grade)

Week 10 (August 17-20)

Back to School Bootcamp is the perfect camp to refresh school skills during our final week of summer camp! The morning session will focus on Reading. Designed to mimic a classroom setting, students will review and reinforce key concepts in grammar, reading, and writing while engaging in new, level-tailored lessons. This focused, supportive camp helps build confidence, strengthen skills, and ensure a smooth transition into the upcoming school year.

Read it & Eat it (JK-1st Grade)

Week 2 (June 22-25)

Step into the world of classic literature with a creative twist! Students will explore timeless stories while focusing on a different reading comprehension skill each day. Through engaging discussions and interactive activities, they’ll strengthen fluency and deepen their understanding of key themes, characters, and main ideas. To wrap up each day, campers will enjoy a fun and delicious cooking project inspired by the story’s food; bringing each tale to life through both creativity and taste!

Middle School Book Club: Out of My Mind (6th-8th Grade)

Week 2 (June 22-25)

Dive into the inspiring world of Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper! In this book club, students will read and discuss this powerful story about determination, friendship, and finding your voice. Through engaging conversations, creative activities, and thoughtful reflections, campers will explore themes of empathy and resilience while connecting deeply with Melody’s unforgettable journey. It’s the perfect camp for readers who love meaningful stories and great discussions!

Reading with a Purpose (1st Grade)

Week 3 (June 29-July 2)

Join Mrs. Owens, who has designed this class to help students delve into texts to better identify, interpret, and infer using a variety of literary strategies. Her tailored lessons will provide a wonderful environment for students to receive differentiated instruction to improve their reading skills for the upcoming school year. Topics include analyzing text structure, understanding the author’s purpose, drawing inferences, and identifying context clues.

Novel Study: The Lemonade War (2nd–3rd Grade)

Week 3 (June 29-July 2)

Join us for a week of reading, creativity, and friendly competition as we dive into The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies! Campers will explore the story of siblings Evan and Jessie as they face off in a lemonade-selling challenge full of clever strategies, real-world math, and lessons in teamwork. Through engaging discussions, hands-on projects, and themed activities, students will strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills- all while having a blast bringing the story to life!

Novel Study: Snoop (4th–8th Grade)

Week 3 (June 29-July 2)

Dive into the suspenseful and fast-paced world of Snoop by Gordon Korman! In this week-long novel study, campers will explore mystery, teamwork, and problem-solving as they follow a thrilling story filled with twists and turns. Through engaging discussions, reading comprehension activities, and creative projects, students will strengthen literacy skills while uncovering clues and connecting with Korman’s unforgettable characters. Perfect for readers who love a good mystery and the excitement of figuring out “whodunit!”

Cat in the Hat- Literacy Fun (PK)

Week 3 (June 29-July 2)

Step into the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss during our Cat in the Hat – Literacy Fun camp! This week, children will build early literacy skills through playful rhymes, silly stories, and hands-on activities inspired by beloved Seuss characters. Campers will practice letter recognition, rhyming, sequencing, and story comprehension — all while exploring the joy of books and imagination.
Our HOPE Academy classes are available to children aged 3 through 4 years old and all students must be fully potty trained in order to participate. PM academy campers do NOT nap.
