Our History Heritage Oak was founded in 1966 as a small preschool dedicated to balancing strong academics with character development. Teachers drew from the Carden tradition, helping students build both intellectual and personal foundations. Over time, the school expanded, adding elementary classes to meet the growing demand for its enriching curriculum. By the late 1980s, the original facility had begun to show its age. A new chapter began in 1992 when Phyllis and Greg Cygan purchased the school. They relocated it to a newly renovated building in Yorba Linda. With the move came a new name, Heritage Oak Private School, a reflection of its continued growth and commitment to excellence. Philosophy We establish and maintain high levels of academic and behavioral standards, so that our students are prepared for what comes next. Our commitment is evident, with 100% of our graduates usually gaining acceptance into their preferred high schools. Notably, 94% of these students, on average, are placed into honors classes as freshmen. Our teachers are role models for our students. They show kindness, teamwork, and a love for learning. They provide our students with a strong academic foundation that promotes cooperation, higher level thinking, problem solving, and lifelong learning. Our teachers are dedicated to our school, with an average of 95% returning year after year. Our parents are very involved in their child’s education. They are aware of their children’s progress and send them to school prepared to learn. Parents reinforce the development of their child’s responsibility. They model an attitude of cooperation and communication with all members of our community. Our students not only have high academic standards, but high behavioral standards as well. They respect each other, their parents, and the community. They are ready to learn, put forth their best efforts, participate, and develop resilience to handle any issue that may come their way. How is discipline handled at your school? Our teachers help our students learn how to make good choices by using positive reinforcement and praise. When they do the right thing, our teachers notice and celebrate it! Our expectations are clearly outlined, applied consistently, and balance firmness with care. We believe our students thrive when they know their boundaries and expectations. Our goal is to help them grow, learn, and be their best selves. How are parents involved at Heritage Oak? Parents are an integral part of our school family. While we do not require volunteering, parents can help in many ways. Many enjoy volunteering in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, or offering special skills. All volunteers need to complete a background check to help keep everyone safe. Parents are invited to fun events like Back-to-School Night, Welcome Back Party, Trunk or Treat, Mother-Child Event, and Father-Child Event. We also have a special parent group called the Parent Assistance League (PAL). They meet every month to talk about school activities and find ways to support our school. It is a great way for parents to be involved and make a difference. How often do you communicate with parents? We make sure our parents always know what is happening at our school. Every week, we send a school bulletin with important updates and events. Parents can also check their child’s grades and homework online at any time. Teachers stay in touch with parents through emails and phone calls. If parents want to talk more, they can always ask to meet with their child’s teacher. This helps everyone work together to support each child’s learning. To enhance accessibility, we provide a free mobile app that grants our families instant access to campus photos, videos, the school calendar, and other items. How is the success of Heritage Oak’s program measured? At Heritage Oak, we know our program is successful when our students are happy and parents are proud. However, we also take pride in our external achievements. Starting in junior kindergarten, our students take national tests and they usually score above 90% in reading and math. Our P.E. and arts programs have earned distinguished recognition. Our students shine in art contests, both near and far. Our Debate team often excels in the Orange County Debate League Championships. Our music students have received many awards and performed at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Additionally, our students regularly achieve high rankings in the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. Most notably, Heritage Oak was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education, a testament to our commitment to excellence in education. What are Personal Learning Plans? We use Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) to provide our students with strategies on how to best succeed in the classroom. Starting in junior kindergarten, our teachers create a PLP for each child that focuses on academic and social goals. This ensures that our students continue to grow in both areas, while fostering a love for learning. How do you assist with new student transition? Starting a new school can be a big change, especially for older children. That is why most of our new students attend orientation. They are also assigned a peer buddy to help them get acquainted with our campus. We know that feeling good at school is just as important as doing well in class. We have four principals on campus, dedicated by grade level, who check in and make sure new students are adjusting well. Teachers also stay in touch with families to ensure that each child is enjoying their new school and feels welcome.
