Middle School Home / Academics / Middle School Middle School: Engaged, Enriched, and Well-Prepared In middle school, our students learn math (pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry), English, literature, science, social studies, French or Spanish, and physical education. They are also required to choose one of four year-long supplemental courses: band, orchestra, musical theatre, or debate. They also choose one elective per semester. These classes allow students to explore their passions. Some examples include computer programming, Math Wizards, Masterminds, 3-D printing, leadership, film appreciation, photography, Genius Hour, and show choir. Middle school students also participated in more in-depth cotillion classes, including a formal family event at a country club. They learn good manners, how to speak in front of a group, create a resume, and prepare for job interviews. They also practice solving problems and thinking critically. Our students can take part in leadership opportunities including student government, National Junior Honor Society, Kindness Crew and more. Every student uses an iPad with Apple Business Suite and enrichment websites to help with schoolwork. They learn how to stay safe online and practice good digital citizenship. This helps them prepare for high school and beyond. In language arts, our students read different types of stories to help them better-understand literature. In social studies, they go on a journey through ancient civilizations like Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. In earth science, they explore how our planet changes through hands-on STEAM activities. In math, they start learning pre-algebra. This helps build strong problem-solving skills. Students can choose to learn Spanish or French, focusing on speaking the language and learning about new cultures. The arts come alive in the theatre class. Our students get to act, sing, and learn about stagecraft. They can participate in band or orchestra, as well as debate. We also take field trips to places like the Columbia Memorial Space Center, Bowers Museum, and AstroCamp. 7th Grade 7th Grade Seventh grade is a year of academic growth and creative expression. In English, our students improve their writing and find their own unique voices through stories and essays. They read novels to learn about history through personal experiences. In social studies, they explore the Medieval world and beyond, and learn about important civilizations, cultural movements, and events from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. Life science includes dissections and STEAM projects to help students understand living systems. Algebra 1 challenges them with real-world applications of math concepts. For world languages, they can choose Spanish or French. They practice speaking, learn about different cultures, and work on projects to improve their language skills. Theatre class lets our students dive deeper into acting, musical performances, improv, and learning how to work behind the scenes. They can participate in band or orchestra, as well as debate. Field trips include Medieval Times, the Holocaust Museum LA, and three-day adventure at the Catalina Island Marine Institute. 8th Grade 8th Grade In 8th grade, our students get ready for high school. In English, they write persuasive essays, analytical papers, and research projects. Their work connects to important themes like justice, equality, and U.S. history. In social studies, they explore how America grew from its founding through the Industrial Revolution. They learn about democracy, reform movements, and cultural changes that shaped our nation. In science, our students discover the basics of physics and chemistry. In math, they study geometry and practice problem solving and proof strategies. For world languages, they can choose Spanish or French. They practice speaking, reading, and writing through conversations, stories and multimedia projects. In theatre, they take on advanced performance techniques, mentor younger students, and learn more about production. They can participate in band or orchestra, as well as debate. Field trips include a STEM-focused tour at Knott’s Berry Farm, a mock trial at the North Justice Center, and an immersive Washington D.C. and New York trip. 6th Grade Personal Learning Plans: Middle School In middle school, students’ Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) evolve with them. Each student has a PLP Advisor who helps them with the subjects in which they need the most assistance. These advisors get to know their students well and guide them toward success in school. Teachers also support our students by giving them time in class to practice different skills. They show students new ways to learn, helping each one discover what works best for them. Just like in our younger grades, middle school PLPs include a social component. Each grade level focuses on a special character trait. We encourage our students to practice these traits in their own lives. This helps them grow not just as learners, but as kind and confident individuals. Children take responsibility for their learning and present the plans to their parents.
